WYSIWYG Editors

What You See Is What You Get editors are gifs bestowed upon the Web developer who is unfamiliar with or afraid of coding HTML.

Similar in appearance to word processors like Text Edit and Note Pad, they conceal the HTML coding so Web developers can focus on designing the Web site. When a developer formats objects or text in documents – as with word processors – the editor automatically writes matching code. Essentially, the developer only works on the visual component of Web document while the editor does the rest.

In addition to authoring hall pages, editors are commonly used for word processors. In this mode, the acronym for “what you see is what you get” means the content a user sees as he or she edits a document closely resembling the final layout.

Advantages of WYSIWYG Editors

Thanks to its visual nature, novices and newcomers to Web development and publishing can easily learn the HTML-authoring software.

For uncomplicated or perhaps even static Web sites, editors are ideal because Web pages can be designed and posted without having to write any HTML code at all.

Even experienced Web designers use software to create relatively complex tables and rows. In addition, the software has evolved to support JavaScript and cascading style sheets to create dynamic Web pages.

Though WYSIWYG software is convenient, it is still important to know one's craft. Those who are new to Web development may find a basic working knowledge of hand-coding HTML will be beneficial in the future.

Disadvantages of WYSIWYG Editors

Although editors are easy to learn and use, some may produce non-standard HTML code or browser-incompatible code. This is bad news for both the Web developer and the unsuspecting browser. When Web developers give up control of how their Web pages turn out, browsers risk computer crashes with the incompatible HTML code.

There are a variety of limited functions when using editor software. For example, it is difficult – if not impossible – to edit Web pages created using this software. Those who are unfamiliar with hand-coding HTML will have much greater difficulty making code alterations to pages created using wisely software.

More experienced Web developers will agree hand-coding is more precise than pre-written HTML code. For sites with complex functions like tables, trees and rows, hand-coding may be a better option.
