Static Templates

Published: October 31, 2006

Web publishers use Web templates to create documents where the content is separate from the presentation.

A template is similar to a cookie-cutter design, where developers can buy pre-designed templates to use for their own Web pages or documents. Well-maintained Web sites update and refine information on a regular basis. This can be monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or daily. As such, there needs to be a standard Web publishers can work with. Above all, this maintains a cohesive and consistent appearance in the Web page.

Developers have two options when it comes to updating their Web pages. The first option is to use dynamic Web pages, which can be quickly altered. Dynamic designs are best suited for Web sites where information needs to be updated either daily or weekly. For others, static Web page templates may be used.

Static web templates essentially are HTML files and can be automated as needed. Static templates are called so for a variety of reasons. Static templates list the exact same information on different browsers and platforms. They are also static because people browsing through a static Web site are doing so through static documents which are changing infrequently.

Automation of Standardization

1.    Choose a Web template system to maintain a Web site. This means using either static or dynamic Web templates.
2.    Specify presentation standards through Web templates. This can include layout, page structure and site navigation.
3.    Specify and update content on a database.

Why Use Static Templates Anyway?

Static templates separate presentation from content and prevent element repetition. Separating the document in this way lets designers and developers work on the same Web page in different contexts. For example, templates allow graphic designers to use PHP or CSS to design the layout, graphics and dynamics of the Web page. At the same time, developers can use static templates to develop the content of the Web page.

These cookie-cutter designs are sometimes offered free or for nominal fees. Their design and layout often reflect their mass-produced qualities. Luckily, plenty of editors (computer programs) Web developers can use to customize these static templates. WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver, Bluefish and Amaya are a few examples. FrontPage templates can only be used with Microsoft's FrontPage software.
